Best Time to See Leopards in Jawai
Jawai, in Rajasthan's Pali district, is one of the few places in India where leopards live openly among granite hills, temples and Rabari herders. Sightings happen all year, but timing makes a big difference.
Best months: October to March
The cool, dry months are the most comfortable and the most rewarding. Leopards bask on the warm rocks in the early morning and late afternoon, and the thin winter vegetation makes them easier to spot. October to March is also when migratory birds arrive at Jawai Dam.
Summer: April to June
It gets hot, often above 40°C at midday, but leopards come out on the rocks around sunset and stay near water. If you can handle the heat, evening safaris in summer can be excellent and quieter.
Monsoon: July to September
The hills turn green and the landscape is beautiful, but the cover is denser and some tracks may close after heavy rain. Sightings drop, but photographers love the dramatic skies.
Morning or evening?
- Morning (around 6:30 AM): leopards return to their caves after the night's hunt, and the light is soft and golden.
- Evening (around 4:00 PM): leopards wake up and climb to the ridges to watch the land below before heading out.
For the best chances, book both a morning and an evening safari. Each drive covers different hills.
Tips for a better sighting
- Bring binoculars. Leopards often sit high on distant ridges.
- Wear earthy colours and keep voices low at sightings.
- Trust your naturalist. They read pug marks, alarm calls and the herders' tips.
